Uncle's X-mas present!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to remind you to look for Carole and I in the parking lot this Monday and Wednesday before class to help finish uncle's present. Does anyone come on Tuesday only? If so, I'd be happy to come Tuesday as well.

I know Carole and I haven't spoken to everyone regarding this escapade, so if you haven't heard from us, consider this a heads up that a plan is afoot. Look for the blond and brunette haoles in the parking lot!

Cheers,
Laura

CHRISTMAS PARTY THIS SATURDAY!

ok, just clarifying what i understand from last saturday...
- arrive at 2pm to assist with decorations
- ALOHA ATTIRE, because you will be dancing in whatever you're wearing
- competing dancers bring dresses, because competition numbers will be the only ones done in "costume"
- no flowers will be provided, so please "adorn" yourselves in whatever you feel makes you naninani :)

is that right???

Quick update...

Welcome back Liz from your trip to Japan. Hope you took lots of pictures for sharing.

If anyone is going to hula this week, there will be sign ups for next Saturday. If you don't mind, can someone sign me up for set up. I don't mind getting there early and doing that.

I believe the makua's who competed we are asked to bring our purple dresses in addition to a pretty muumuu for dancing other songs. There is an expectation that we will perform Kipu Kai.

Anything else going on out there? I'm off to D.C. this morning and will not be back until Thursday night. I wish you all a wonderful week!

online access to latest halau folder....

ok, so the only quick-fix way i could figure out how to get the latest halau folder online is by creating another blog site at Yahoo!. like this blog, you don't need a yahoo email address to access it, but you do have to do a little "registration".

i'm not exactly sure about the exact steps, but you should be able to get access by doing one of the following:
1. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hulamakua/ and follow any prompts, or
2. Email to hulamakua-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and I think that will send me an email to add you as a member, or
3. Ask help from someone who's computer savvy, i.e., a teenager ;)

now that the folder is somewhere on the web, maybe someone can figure out how to add it to this site or another site that's more easily accessible.

aloha!

PS. anyone know if there's class this saturday???

Results are in...

... If you can attend hula Wednesday night, 11/7, Aunty and Uncle will share the results from Saturday's performance. If the majority of us are there, they will.

I will stop by, but unfortunately, I will not get there before 7:30 p.m. I hope sooner, but rather doubt it. I totally forgot I had another meeting I need to be at.

See you tomorrow.

Aloha,
Ricki

Don't forget...

... no class Monday night!

Look forward to seeing everyone either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Don't forget for those Makua who attend class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and or Thursday, if you hear anything in class on any of those days, please be sure to post on this site.

Its important that this be our main communication tool to each other.

Yahoo...We did it...

...Well we danced... we saw... we had fun... not sure yet how we did, but we'll know on Wednesday, November 7. Thank you all for making this a very memorable weekend.

Thanks especially to Carol, Laura and Cyri... wow you all are awesome! Thank you for all your assistance and support. You were the best "peeps".

Thanks also to Lilly for another amazing job with doing our makeup which made us all feel especially beautiful.

For anyone who knows Jojo, Aunty Priscilla's brother, he did a terrific job on our hair. Is there any way we can hire him again for the Christmas show??? Smile.

Thank you to Jeri for the fabulous handmade leis. Thanks for thinking of us and making us feel important and part of the competition team.

Overall, a great weekend! Thank you to all who made this happen.

Me kealoha pumehana... with all my love!

one last rehearsal!!!

- see you all tonight at 8pm! i will try to get there just a little earlier to open up so no one is waiting outside.

- rehearsal on tuesday night with uncle felt really good. (we missed you ronell, of course)! let's do that again and just go over the dance repeatedly back-to-back. no more comments or corrections... unless it's a fundamental error, then by all means, someone say something. as far as the "little" things we'll just start shouting them out as we're dancing. i think we get more done that way. (good note for next season) we all know the dance well enough that we can multi-task like that :)

ALOHA!

update from monday night rehearsal...

- get low and swing those hips! let's get back to the basics! we've made the corrections and we know them. like abella says, we just have to dance it over & over & over again with each other so we can learn to dance as one :) i really believe that if we have awesome basics, the judges will be so amazed at the beauty of the dance it will be easier to forget that someone's "45" was off ;)

- turns out lilly has never used a tan or brown on our eyes EVER. she does however suggest that we all get the base white in two - matte and frosty. she & uncle also decided on a lipstick color. (i saw it, looks nice). i will try to get to the halau early to talk with her about prices and orders. i told lilly we would forego the make-up orders this time around cuz we have enough to stress about, but she says she still has time to get them for us for this weekend and she happens to be out of the white eyeshadow base anyway. i'm thinking i'll create an order sheet, and leave it up to each makua about which product they want for their own and which ones they want to leave up to "community" make-up.

- lei: i'm getting every makua her own dental floss spool... green mint flavored and waxed :) this way we can just string the mock mokihana in one looong lei until it's long enough to double up for each of us and we don't have to worry about, "is it long enough? do we have to cut this one and knot it together with that one?" or whatever. i will likely get to the hotel before everyone, so i will meet up with uncle and get the mock mokihana. liz will be providing the needles and possibly thimbles. if you have your own thimble, bring it just in case.

- reminder: rehearsal tonight at 8pm. BRING YOUR DRESS IN A GARMENT BAG AND GIVE TO DESI WITH A BIG HUG & HONI. pay uncle or turn in your raffle tix if you haven't already. we will be going over the ka`i & the ho`i... just doing it over & over & over. remember, the ka`i & the ho`i are our first & last impression on the judges, so we should make it fabulous! ;) finally, don't let me leave without the halau key for thursday's practice.

ALOOOHA,
nina

UPdate from this afternoon's practice

Aloha,
Just to confirm we are all ont he same page.

We will have practice tomorrow, Monday night at 8 p.m. I, however, will not be able to make it. Lilly will also be on hand with samples of lipsticks and something else.

We will have practice on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

We can practice on Wednesday, if you're available. Nina is not, so its a matter of who can be there and whether we want to.

It would be great if we could have one last practice Thursday night. Aunty and Uncle will not be on hand, but Nina will have the key to open up and lock up.

Since, we're all for the most part leaving Friday night, should we consider renting a van? Liz already has a car reserved, but our hotel is about 10-15 miles from the convention center. It might be worthwhile to ask Liz to change the car to a bigger one and we can all contribute to it. Any thoughts?

Finally, I believe it's Natalie, from the Wahine group who offered to take our costumes (in garment bag) to the hotel as she and her boyfriend are planning to drive up as well. If you're interested in doing this, take your bag to hula by Wednesday.

If anyone has anything more to add or any corrections, please feel free to post your comments.

Aloha... have a great week!

Update from tonight's practice

Aloha,
Great practice tonight. I really love that we're getting very specific about our moves, dance, stance, etc.

What's the news on the make-up? How long will it take for us to get the make up from Lilly? I have a bunch of stuff coming down the pike so I'm really not in a position to buy all that stuff, go to Pleasanton, pay for the motel room, meals, etc. Would someone mind if I share the makeup with one of you if I bring my own brushes? smile!

Also, don't forget our monies are due this Sunday when we come for practice. Can someone please confirm though that we are still expected to sell our tickets AND pay the $50 or do we sell all our tickets and then we get to keep half the money? I'm really confused now.

Changes...

Aloha,
What do you think of the change? I moved the calendar to the top of our comments? I wish I could change the layout, but I'm limited to what can be done. Hope this helps Ivy.

Bummer...

Wow, I'm bummed that I missed the group practice on Saturday. Any chance there might be another this weekend?
Well, I'll see you Thursday night. I may be a tad late, but I will be there.
Love you all...

suggested 2008 calendar...

here is a proposed month-to-month to keep us focused on our 2008 goals and ultimately limit the butterflies associated with the "who-goes-where?-what-dress?-what-lei?-when-am-i-supposed-to-(fill-in-the-blank)?-what-the-heck-is-an-invisible-zipper-and-why-don't-i-have-one?" jitters... ;)

jan - pick song, learn choreography
feb - review, review, review
mar - kumu pick competition team
apr - figure out dress & lei for both ho`ike & EHM... and make some final decisions about all makeup. is it MAC rocker unless otherwise specified or have he trashed MAC rocker altogether???
may - clean, clean, clean, competitors learn second version... (1st) for ho`ike and (2nd) with formation changes for e hula mau... perhaps incorporate rehearsals with sewing nights
jun - HO`IKE
jul - HO`OLAU`ALEA (GARDENA), competitors learn ka`i & ho`i for EHM
aug - competitors clean, clean, clean some more
sep - E HULA MAU
oct - if not already *perfect* ;) see judges sheets & improve
nov - IA `OE E KA LA
dec - CHRISTMAS PROGRAM... and pats on the back all around to competitors, group performers, and soloists!

***DISCLOSURE***
this month-to-month subject to change based on kumu's approval. it is also NOT intended to replace the annual event calendar distributed by the kumu in any way, but to supplement it. it is also open to suggestions :)

Taping Kipu Kai rehearsal...

Hi! I was talking with Lily about the Kipu Kai performance this afternoon. She said it's looking good, but there's a few things here & there that we need to fix. I was thinking it would be a good idea to film ourselves in rehearsal and then watch to analyze our errors & successes. Watching myself on video, although always a difficult thing to do, helps me see the little things I need to fix. What do you think?

St. Paul, Sunday...

... any info on what costumes we need?... or is it the usual, "just bring everything" plan? :)

Video taping

Aloha kakou,

I received permission from Uncle to video tape the dances [because I'm unable to learn just by copying... my memory must work another way.... and I'm getting a little frustrated that each Monday seems like a whole new day'

Well, the long and short of it is; the family that I have here [having just returned to CA and had no time to make friends other than you folks] doesn't have a camcorder nor friends that have 'em.

Does anyone have a recording device that I can borrow on a Monday and return the tape next Monday? I'm hoping that there is a place -- like there is in Missouri to change tapes to DVD's.

If you have one that you are willing to let me use during the Mon eve papa hula, please contact me @ ivyaloha AT gmail.com OR 573 864 3488

Help!

So far I've added everyone who wanted to be added to the blog, but I'm in a dilemma! I can't figure out how to stretch the picture of us sewing our leis. Can someone please help!!!

I had the picture just perfect and then I started playing around with it and now its all funky! Sorry...

Next week practice

Good evening!
I'd like to begin practice as soon as you all want to, but just to give you my schedule next week. I can probably come Monday through Thursday at 8 p.m. I have meetings until at least 7:30 p.m.

Liz, will you be able to ask Uncle Kawika if your husband can videotape him so that we can practice with him singing versus the CD that's not correct.

I won't be at hula the rest of this week or Saturday, so when anything gets scheduled please post the message here.

Also Liz, Laura from the Monday/Wednesday class, would like to know how they can get a room. She and her friend would like to come up to Pleasanton and be our cheerleaders (for the whole halau, not just us!). I'll forward her email to you and you all can work that out.

I think that's it for now. Have a great evening. By the way, who will be able to perform at Abella's church on Sunday, 9/30? I'm in, but we kind of need to know who else will be there.

Aloha,
Ricki

Practice for Pleasanton

Hi everyone,

For those of us who are going to Pleasanton, can we begin practicing next Monday if Uncle is okay with that?

Also, who still wants a room? Liz has reserved 3 rooms. I will be sharing a room with Monique and Liz. I believe Ronell & Heather might have the other, Nina will you be taking the third one or Abella or?? I can't get a hold of Jennifer so we'll need to ask her as well.

Glendora Christmas Concert

Good evening!

Uncle Kawika informed all of us tonight that our Christmas concert on December 8 has a limit of 200 attendees.

If you think you're going to attend, please buy your tickets now. They are $20 and includes not only an awesome show but dinner.

I think we should all figure how many tickets we want and place our orders ASAP!

Aloha...

Woo Hoo Makua!

halau folders...

i have sent halau folders to the makua email on file. please check your emails for a message from rowenasia@hotmail.com. if you did not receive it, let me know and i can print a new folder out for you. also, let me know if you prefer black&white or color. the colors are pretty and all, but some may find it difficult to read.

if you have other lyrics not included in the folder that you would like me to format or add pictures to (so you can see the flower or place that you're dancing about)... or if you just need them retyped (because they're copies of copies of copies... or because you've "misplaced" them... or because you spilled coffee on them... etc.), just let me know!

Aloha and welcome

Good evening Makua!

Okay, here's our blog. Now to ensure that this works we need to be sure that anyone who has been given access to the blog uses it to be sure to keep us all updated on what's going on.

The first order of business and something I'm quite anxious to get out to you is reviewing schedules to see when we'll be practicing for Pleasanton. As it stands, I can meet just like we did before, any night after 8:00 p.m. However, you should know that I will be out of town October 20.

Also, so far Ronell and I have made airline reservations to Oakland. We leave on Friday, 11/2 from Ontario at 8 p.m. and arrive in Oakland around 9:15 p.m. We then leave Sunday around 11:15 a.m.

I just spoke to Liz and she informed me that three rooms have been reserved at the San Ramon Marriott which is the host hotel.

There are some events coming up and I'll update as soon as I get home from hula tomorrow night.
